In Mark 4:39, we find Jesus resting in a boat when a fierce storm suddenly arises. It’s important to note that several of His disciples were experienced fishermen, familiar with the rough waters of the Sea of Galilee. Yet, this storm was especially severe, with waves crashing into the boat. In their panic, the disciples woke Jesus, and He calmly responded to the storm, saying, “Peace, be still.” Instantly, the storm stopped.
In our lives, we all face storms—some small, others overwhelming. It's easy to look around during these tough times and feel afraid, wondering if we’ll make it through. Even the most skilled among us can feel fear in the midst of life’s challenges.
Later in the Gospel of Matthew (14:28-31), we see another storm scenario, this time when Peter steps out of the boat to walk on water toward Jesus. At first, Peter walks on the water, buoyed by his faith. However, when he notices the wind and waves, he becomes frightened and begins to sink. In that moment of fear, he cries out to Jesus, who immediately reaches out to save him.
This story contrasts with the earlier account in Mark. While the disciples were terrified in the boat, Peter’s initial reaction was one of boldness and faith. Yet, when he shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm, he faltered. Jesus' response to both situations reminds us of His power over our fears and the storms in our lives.
When Jesus steps in and says, “Peace, be still,” it’s not just a calming of the storm; it is a deep and meaningful peace. In the original Greek, this “Great Calm” is called megalē hēsuchia. The word "great" (megalē) means something extraordinary, while "calm" (hēsuchia) refers to quietness and stillness. Together, they express a powerful sense of peace that surrounds us after the storm has passed.
Every day, I look for moments of serenity, yet I often miss these chances during my own storms, especially the bigger ones. I want to remember that when challenges come, I can turn to God, knowing that He is the Master of the storm. Why should I worry?
I want to not only look for this “Great Calm” in times of trouble but also to live in this peace and serenity of Christ Jesus every day, no matter the storms that may come my way.
